" Lucky Strikes" - Li was mentioned by Rossi along with John Hinckley, Jr.Two unnamed passengers (attempted slashed at).The unnamed bus driver (attempted slashed at).(stabbed to death, decapitated, mutilated, and cannibalized post-mortem) July 30, 2008: The Greyhound Bus attack.Li later attempted to drive the bus away (but was halted since the driver used the bus's emergency immobilizer system) and then tried to climb out of a window after a day-long stand-off. He also cut off his ear, nose, and tongue. He then decapitated him and proceeded to mutilate and cannibalize his body, eating his eyes and part of his heart. When he killed Tim McLean, he stabbed him in the neck and chest with a large hunting knife. Since Li only killed one victim, the term "M.O" is somewhat misused. One of the officers who responded to the attack suffered from PTSD and later committed suicide. He has still been described as psychotic, but is on medication. He legally changed his name to Will Baker and currently lives free. After six years, Li was released in 2015. While in the hospital, Li was sued by several of the bus's passengers and that had been present during the attack, as well as McLean's family members. Throughout the trial, Li only asked to be killed several times. Li was ultimately deemed not guilty by reason of insanity and sent to the Selkirk Mental Health Centre. Li pleaded the insanity defense, with his psychiatrist claiming that God told him McLean was evil. Trial, Institutionalization, and Release A witness said that Li showed no sign of rage or any other emotion throughout the entire attack, with his actions being "robotic" in nature and that he seemed oblivious to the presence of others. The police recovered most of McLean's remains, some of which were later found in Li's pockets. After a day-long stand-off, Li finally attempted to escape the bus through a window, but was tasered and arrested. He proceeded to dismember, decapitate, and cannibalize McLean's body while everyone else fled the bus and police arrived. Two of them and the driver attempted to save McLean, but Li chased them away with the knife. After sitting next to McLean (who fell asleep and barely acknowledged him), Li suddenly withdrew a knife and stabbed McLean to death while numerous passengers looked on in horror. Li also boarded the bus a short time later. Tim McLean, who was returning home from work, boarded a Greyhound bus. The very next morning, Li sold his laptop to a boy. There, he spent the night on a bench outside a grocery store. On July 29, 2008, Li boarded a bus heading for Winnipeg and arrived in Erickson. By all accounts, Li was described as normal. Weeks before the attack, he was fired from his job at Walmart. Li then moved to Edmonton without his wife (who later joined him) and he acquired several other jobs. He quit his job in 2006 and became a forklift operator. Li at some point married a woman named Anna and became a menial worker at Grant Memorial Church, working there for six months despite the language barrier between him and others. Li was institutionalized sometime before gaining his citizenship after being found by officers "following the sun", something he claimed God told him to do. He moved to Canada in 2001 and obtained legal Canadian citizenship in 2006. Little is known about his early life, but he did graduate from the Wuhan Institute of Technology and acquired a job as a computer software engineer.

He published over 100 articles in scientific journals, and 13 books including Medical Judgement and Decision Making (with Timothy Griffin), Childhood Psychopathology (with James Johnson, two editions), Pavlov’s Heirs and a well-known textbook on abnormal psychology, Abnormal Psychology, A Developmental Approach. Over these years, Schwartz's research spanned clinical psychology, psychiatry, public health and medical decision making. He also served as visiting professor at Stanford University in 1983 and Harvard University in 1987. In 1980, he transferred to the University of Queensland first as Reader and then as Professor of Psychology. In 1978 he moved to Australia to take up the position of Senior Lecturer in clinical psychology at the University of Western Australia in Perth. This led him to University of Texas Medical Branch where he was a full-time researcher in psychiatry. He began his academic career teaching at the Northern Illinois University. He has also worked as a journalist, authoring many articles for research journals, magazines and newspapers. After leaving the City University of New York, he was commissioned an officer in the Public Health Service serving at the National Institute of Mental Health before completing a PhD degree at Syracuse University as a US Public Health Service Fellow. He was a National Merit Scholar finalist and he received a New York State Regent Scholarship. After attending public schools, he entered Brooklyn College of the City University of New York. Steven Schwartz was born in New York City in 1946. Throughout his career he was successful in establishing new schools and facilities at the universities he was involved with. He defended his record by saying that he wished universities to be more market-oriented, research-focused, accountable, transparent and held to higher standards, in the hope of improving university profiles and attracting more students, funding and researchers. His style of management was controversial and attracted considerable opposition. He is a trained psychologist and served both as senior academic and researcher, then as a university corporate manager. He was previously Vice Chancellor of Brunel University in the UK and of Murdoch University in Western Australia. If you wanted the random name picker to choose two winners, you would choose "2" and two names from the list would appear. For example, if you're picking a single winner from a list of names, you would choose "1" and the one name generated would be the winner. In this case, you choose the number of names you want to appear. The first way this can be used is as a random name picker. Once you choose it, a box will appear and all you need to do is paste your list of names into the name randomizer. The name randomizer from a list is pretty simple and straightforward. There are two distinct ways it can be used depending on whether you want to create entirely new random names or if you want to use a name randomizer as a name picker from a list of names you already have. The first step is to choose the actual way you want to use it. It is designed to ensure fairness and impartiality, and we will never engage in any actions to change the results. For those who are looking to create a random name or who are looking for a name randomizer, the Random Name Generator is the perfect tool for you. We want to emphasize that we do not entertain requests to alter the outcome of the random winner generator. How fair is the Name Picker?Įvery raffle conducted using our tool is entirely random and cannot be manipulated. However, it's worth noting that in certain browsers, the name selector may experience some slowdown when dealing with such a large volume of names. We have extensively tested our tool with over 1 million names, and it continues to function effectively. The Name Picker tool can capable of handling an unlimited number of names. How many names can the Name Picker handle? For the logo, please provide a link to an online image in one of the following formats: jpg, jpeg, png, svg, or gif. Simply check the "Add contest information to results" option within the form and enter your desired custom information. You can now customize the results with a title, intro text, and a logo. We have introduced a new feature that allows you to personalize the Name Picker contest results. Can I add my logo to the Name Picker results? Tip: You can select new winners with the pick again button that with be displayed below the result with winners. You can easily remove the previous name picker results with the cross button. If you run multiple draws, you will have access to the previous draw information as well. The result displays the winner(s) of the Random Name Picker, the total number of names, and the date/time of the draw.
The statute contains no requirement that the statement be consulted for purposes of refreshment before or while testifying the rule so requires. The statute applies only to government witnesses the rule applies to all witnesses. The statute applies only to criminal cases the rule applies to all cases. The Jencks statute applies only to statements of witnesses the rule is not so limited. With this limitation in mind, some differences of application may be noted. 343, 351 (1959), and disclosure under the rule is limited similarly by the statutory conditions. The same sensitivity to disclosure of government files may be involved hence the rule is expressly made subject to the statute, subdivision (a) of which provides: “In any criminal prosecution brought by the United States, no statement or report in the possession of the United States which was made by a Government witness or prospective Government witness (other than the defendant) shall be the subject of a subpena, discovery, or inspection until said witness has testified on direct examination in the trial of the case.” Items falling within the purview of the statute are producible only as provided by its terms, Palermo v. §3500: to promote the search of credibility and memory. The purpose of the rule is the same as that of the Jencks statute, 18 U.S.C. The purpose of the phrase “for the purpose of testifying” is to safeguard against using the rule as a pretext for wholesale exploration of an opposing party's files and to insure that access is limited only to those writings which may fairly be said in fact to have an impact upon the testimony of the witness. As Wigmore put it, “the risk of imposition and the need of safeguard is just as great” in both situations. 64 (1917), and this position is believed to be correct. An increasing group of cases has repudiated the distinction, People v. The bulk of the case law has, however, denied the existence of any right to access by the opponent when the writing is used prior to taking the stand, though the judge may have discretion in the matter. The treatment of writings used to refresh recollection while on the stand is in accord with settled doctrine. Notes of Advisory Committee on Proposed Rules But if the prosecution does not comply in a criminal case, the court must strike the witness’s testimony or - if justice so requires - declare a mistrial. If a writing is not produced or is not delivered as ordered, the court may issue any appropriate order. (c) Failure to Produce or Deliver the Writing. Any portion deleted over objection must be preserved for the record. If the producing party claims that the writing includes unrelated matter, the court must examine the writing in camera, delete any unrelated portion, and order that the rest be delivered to the adverse party. § 3500 provides otherwise in a criminal case, an adverse party is entitled to have the writing produced at the hearing, to inspect it, to cross-examine the witness about it, and to introduce in evidence any portion that relates to the witness’s testimony. (b) Adverse Party’s Options Deleting Unrelated Matter. (2) before testifying, if the court decides that justice requires the party to have those options. While I may not be able to finish it, I want to try. I already know I’m going to read the second. There are two more books in the “Diary of an Oxygen Thief” series. Second, sometimes our morbid curiosity gets the best of us, and we have to see what happens next, even if we know it’s probably going to be terrible. First, the amount of buzz a book generates does not reflect the quality. “Diary of an Oxygen Thief” proves two things. There was so much buzz about the book that Simon & Schuster took notice. It was either love or hate with no middle ground. If they read it, they came away with strong feelings. People googled the book to see what it was about. He created a profile on a dating site where he pictured beautiful women holding his book. But most self-published authors aren’t advertising professionals like the author of “Diary of an Oxygen Thief.” The methods he used to generate interest about his book were nothing short of genius. Most self-published books never sell more than a few hundred copies. What’s remarkable about “Diary of an Oxygen Thief” is not the book itself, but how it slipped into the mainstream. However, it’s impossible to tell if that’s because of ineffective writing or the narrator’s narcissism. But even though he talks about his heartbreak, he doesn’t show the emotional impact that’s expected. He is such a sadistic jerk that it’s nearly impossible not to become one too when it comes to him. The only reward for reading the entire book (instead of chucking it) is the promise that the narrator will get his comeuppance - and the reader will get to enjoy his pain. And that’s how the book fails the reader. That’s not a demolition derby! Instead, it’s a disappointment when a crash was what you were expecting. There is only a small scuff on each bumper. There’s no loud boom, no crunching metal and plastic, no fluid hissing from under the hoods - and no shattering glass. They hit head on, but in the split second before they do, they slow to a few miles per hour. Two cars are traveling toward each other at 100 miles per hour in some twisted version of a demolition derby. It’s not written in a way that is even close to enough. But when she finally delivers the blows that level him, it’s not satisfying enough. It’s even revealed long before he introduces Ainsley to the reader. The narrator makes no secret of this throughout most of the book. To make a long-winded story short, Ainsley does to him what he did to women in London. His paranoia continues to grow when he visits New York City on business and meets the beautiful Ainsley. Among other crazy things, he believes his employer is out to get him. Instead, his narcissism continues to shine through, along with a large dose of paranoia. At this point in the story is when the narrator might have had a ‘come to Jesus’ moment or redeemed himself in some other way. While in Minnesota, he’s sober and woman-free. When his narcissism fuels a career move, he relocates from London to Minnesota, USA. He seemingly gets off on his ‘power’ to get women to fall hard for him, knowing he will subsequently break their hearts and scar them. Not physically, as he explains, but emotionally. It’s simply the story of an alcoholic, sadistic narcissist who admittedly enjoys hurting women. Reading more like a fiction novel, the book is nothing spectacular in its writing or content. “Diary of an Oxygen Thief” was first self-published in 2006 as a purported autobiography by an unknown author. Such a perspective recognizes that “markets, customers, resources and contexts are constantly changing,” (Bettencourt et al. Understanding what consumers are trying to accomplish both before and after interacting with a provider can help providers increase the value they provide to their consumers (Seybold 2001). These common examples highlight the importance of understanding the context of the consumer’s overall journey (Rawson et al. As Fournier famously wrote, consumers don’t choose brands, they choose lives (Fournier 1998).Ĭonsumers act as resource integrators in their role as customers of multiple entities, trying to accomplish, for example, the goal of moving to a new home or going on a family vacation. “Consumers” is a more general term than “customers” that emphasizes that people draw on and integrate a wide variety of market and non-market resources to pursue their life paths (Epp and Price 2011). More holistic than a traditional strategic focus on customers, consumer-based strategy recognizes the need to understand consumers as they select, create, integrate, use, adapt, and discard products and services in order to meet needs and accomplish goals. “Consumer-based strategy is organizational strategy that is developed based on insights about consumers” (Hamilton 2016, p. An essential impetus for this issue is to highlight the value of consumer-based strategy for generating customer insights. The focus on consumers rather than customers is deliberate and important (Hamilton 2016). During some parts of these journeys, the consumer role may not be as prominent as other roles such as patient or producer or person. An Uber driver may use his Toyota not only to take his own journeys but also to earn money by taking other people where they need to go. For example, a cancer patient and family members undertake a traumatic emotional journey that involves a complex network of heath care brands, technologies, and services as patients and their families move from diagnosis, through treatment, to recovery, remission, or end-of-life care (Berry et al. However, consumers take other journeys that don’t have consumption as their goal but nonetheless implicate brands, technologies, products, and services. Consumer journeys may anticipate consumption experiences, such as when consumers take steps to choose products, brands, or technologies, engage in online or offline retail experiences, and use products and services. Consumers undertake many journeys in pursuit of large and small life goals and in response to various opportunities, obstacles, and challenges. Soon after arriving, he is befriended by fame-obsessed Rebecca Ahn. Quiet teenager Marc Hall arrives as a new student at Indian Hills High School in Agoura Hills, California. The Bling Ring represents the final work of cinematographer Harris Savides, who died of brain cancer while the film was in post-production, to whom the film is dedicated. The film grossed $20 million worldwide against its $8 million budget. However, others criticized the film for its morally ambiguous approach towards the subject matter. It received generally positive reviews from critics, with many praising the cast and Coppola's "stylish" direction Watson in particular received critical acclaim for her performance. In the United States, it had a limited theatrical release by A24 on June 14, 2013, before opening wide one week later. The Bling Ring had its world premiere on May 1, 2013, in the Un Certain Regard section of the 2013 Cannes Film Festival. Brian Reitzell served as supervisor for the film's soundtrack and co-wrote the musical score with Daniel Lopatin. Principal photography occurred between March and April that same year in Los Angeles, California. Casting took place in early 2012 with Coppola choosing mostly young, unknown actors for the main roles. She saw it as a departure from her previous works by focusing on a group of teenagers who are "products of our growing reality TV culture", exploring consumerist tabloid culture and obsession with fame. Coppola began developing a screenplay based on the real-life burglaries in December 2011, with Francis Ford Coppola executive producing through American Zoetrope and Roman Coppola as producer. The film was an international co-production by producers in the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, and Japan. The story follows a group of fame-obsessed teenagers who use the internet to track celebrities' whereabouts in order to burgle their homes. It is based on the 2010 Vanity Fair article "The Suspects Wore Louboutins" by Nancy Jo Sales, which dealt with a real-life gang known as the Bling Ring. The Bling Ring is a 2013 crime film written and directed by Sofia Coppola featuring an ensemble cast led by Emma Watson, Katie Chang, Israel Broussard, Taissa Farmiga, Claire Julien, Georgia Rock and Leslie Mann. Make sure the Edit › Options › Profile Plot Options setting “Do not save x-values” is off.The k value can be calculated in ImageJ by: Note that the plugin is expecting the k value to be “per-slice” rather than per-second, per-minute, etc. It may be worth performing a background subtraction prior to running the plugin. If you know the decay constant k, you can use the plugin Image › Adjust › Bleach Correction with the exponential fitting method. A mono-exponential decay is described by the equation:Ĭorrected intensity = (Intensity at time t) ÷ exp -k× t where k = decay constant bleach_correction_window.png The process of bleaching and decrease in image intensity can be fitted with a mono-exponential decay, although it often follows a bi-exponential. A stretch in contrast at the first time point may not be adequate 100 time points later. This can make it harder to discern events at the end of the sequence. Often, during acquisition of a time-course, the fluorophore may bleach and the intensity of the image is reduced. If you’d like to help, check out the how to help guide! Correcting for bleaching I hope this was somewhat helpful, and maybe others can pitch in their thoughts as well. The content of this page has not been vetted since shifting away from MediaWiki. I don’t really think there’s a way around that though, except by just making sure all of the step sizes are equivalent for the various z-stacks you compare (so if it’s happening in one, it’s happening in all of them). This is because he felt like it was possible for the same molecules to show up as fluorescence in more that one slice, and thus their colocalization could count double or triple. Someone from Nikon told me though that they felt it was important to have the incremental steps in the z-stack be the same for all of the z-stacks being compared (so even though one might be 30 slices and another 45, the step size for both should be the same). So a single slice is just like one quadrant of an image, but the value given is for the image in its entirety, if that makes sense. What I determined from all the sources I read and people I talked to was that the JaCOP plugin is NOT calculating an average, but instead just giving the coefficients as proportions relative to the total amounts of fluorescence that is there within the entire z-stack as a whole. Sorry it took me a couple days to see this and respond. I still can’t find the exact answer I’m looking for though… I have read that paper as well as a few others over the past few months, though I have to admit some of the information goes over my head. I have to give my thesis seminar pretty soon, and I’m afraid someone on my committee will end up asking me just how exactly these values are calculated from a z-stack…specifically if they are an average or not, but I just can’t seem to find that information anywhere! Thank you for the paper suggestion. The ones I have now range from about 35 to 50 slices. I’m glad to hear you think it is acceptable!īut since all of my images are z-stacks, I was trying to figure out how important it is for them to all be the exact number of slices. I’m trying to be as objective and consistent as possible in setting the threshold values, but I was also unsure just how much that is frowned upon. It seems like most of the papers I’ve read strongly caution against setting your own threshold values though, and instead advocate using the Costes method…but every time I’ve used that method it sets the threshold values way too low. The process you are describing sounds like what I have been doing with the JaCOP plugin which allows me to set my own threshold values and get a Manders M1 and M2 coefficients (red coloc/ total red and green coloc/ total green, which I think is the same as what you described, right?). Thank you for your reply! I agree about the intensity-based colocalization methods, which is also why I chose the Manders method because it was my understanding that it ignores intensity differences…but someone correct me if I’m wrong. |
